layer masking
Layer masking is a tool in
Photoshop that basically does the job of erasing or selecting and cutting.
Though it is similar to these tools, it is a much better tool to use when
combining multiple layers because it allows the option of going back in your
progress even if the mistake was made a long time ago and is no longer in your
history. It is much better than destructive editing because it does not destroy
pixels but instead changes a layers transparency.
To
use the tool, you need to have at least two layers that you want to combine in
Photoshop and put the layer you want to make transparent on top.
Then, click on the layer mask button. When you click it, a white box will appear next to the selected layer that you want to make transparent.
Make sure the white box is selected. Then, click on the paint tool and make the paint colour black. Paint on the area that you would like to make transparent

When you look at the white box, it
will have a black dot on it in the same spot the layer is transparent. Continue
painting until the entire area that you want transparent is transparent.
If you mess up and go to far into the layer,
You can change the colour of the
paintbrush to white and go back to restore the opacity of the area.
